West Virginia Ethics Commission Fires Executive Director Joan Parker

The West Virginia Ethics Commission today fired executive director Joan Parker.

In a five to four vote in executive session, the Commission terminated Parker.

No reason was given for the firing.

Parker has been executive director since March 11, 2013.

She was the commission’s general counsel for four years prior to that.

According to a Commission spokesperson, the five commissioners voting for the termination were — Terry Walker, Michael Greer, Robert Wolfe, Betty Ireland and Kemp Morton.

The four commissioners voting against the termination were — Jack Buckalew, Suzan Singleton, Monte Williams and Drema Radford.

Parker earned her undergraduate degree from Davis & Elkins College and her law degree from Georgetown University.

Before coming to the Commission, she worked for the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Parker previously worked for the West Virginia Supreme Court Administrative Office.

Her first legal job was in the McDowell County office of the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund, a West Virginia legal services provider.
